Database Administrator Career Path

Firstly, I want to say that (honestly),I don't even know what I'm gonna be after graduates...I thought of having some jobs that are computer related; that's all,no more than that...but,lately I had started some research on the career that I can apply after my graduation and making me more clearer on what's a Database Administrator a.k.a DBA is all about...one thing for sure about DBA was it is an easy money jobs(legally, of course...)...I also read about a debate on DBA vs Software Engineer, you can read it here -->click here, it's kinda interesting (for me, I don't know if it is for you) as it explained what's actually a DBA do.

All I know right now is that a skilled  DBA are being demanded by many company database.(Yeah! 1 more point for Database!)...Typically a database administrator is responsible for various aspects of databases such as initial set up/design, setting parameters to maximize performance, and troubleshooting problems (which are really needed by those company)...Here is some interesting fact;" Many database administrators start out as programmers, analysts, or other IT professionals before moving into the database administration field.". Now that I know, I started to feel that Database System is totally AWESOME!!!

All about Database Administrators

HOW MUCH DOES THIS JOB PAY?
In May 2008, average yearly wages of database administrators were $72,900. Database administrators who worked at companies that designed computer systems earned an average of $81,050 in May 2008.

HOW MANY JOBS ARE THERE?
There were about 120,400 database administrators in 2008.

Database administrators work in every sector of the economy. The largest number work in the computer systems design and related services industry. Many work for Internet service providers, Web search portals, and data-processing, hosting, and related services firms.

WHAT ABOUT THE FUTURE?
The number of database administrators is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through 2018. This is because the Internet and e-commerce will continue to expand, resulting in a continuing need to build and maintain databases. Also, the increasing importance being placed on "cyber security"—the protection of electronic information—will require workers skilled in information security.

Job growth will not be as rapid as during the previous decade. The information technology sector will begin to mature and routine work will increasingly be outsourced overseas.

Those having a college or graduate degree in computer science or a related field will have a good chance of getting a job. Those having a lot of related work experience will also have a good chance.

Database Adminstrator

Database Administrators use database software to store and manage information. They will often set up database systems and are responsible for making sure those systems operate efficiently (usually referred to as database performance tuning). They also make sure that the data they store is backed up regularly, stored effectively, and that the data is secure from unauthorized access. Ensuring the data is available, by maximizing database uptime, is also an important function of the database administrator.

Education Needed for Database Administrators

Database Administrators often have a 4 year degree in Computer Science or Management Information Systems (MIS). Knowledge of business functions is also important, as is the ability to communicate with other employees in the company in both technical and non-technical roles.

Database administrators will also often hold a certification for a specific database software program. Oracle database certifications are very popular database certification programs, high in demand with employers. Another popular certification is for the Microsoft Certified Database Administrator or MCDBA. The MCDBA is also one of the highest paying technical certifications.

Becoming a Database Administrator

The best way to become a DBA is to take the relevant classes and familiarize yourself with the specific, popular databases that are in demand. Becoming certified in a specific database program is a good way to show your skill level. Internships are often a great start to a Database Administrator career. Other technical support roles, such as System Administrators and Network Administrators, may easily transition into a Database Administration role by becoming certified as a Database Administrator.

What Is a Database Used For?

Do you know, what is a database used for, and why is it necessary for a business? These questions are crucial for any beginning business owners. In this article, we'll take a look at the most common uses for databases and how they can positively impact your business.

Storing Information
A database is a type of file system that stores information. This is its most basic function. Instead of relying on traditional methods of storing information in physical file folders and cabinets, a database provides digital storage of information.

Providing Information To Multiple Users
Big advances in database technology allows multiple users to access and update information. This information will then be instantly viewable by all users. Not only does this enhance communication within the company, but it also ensures an informed and positive approach to customer service.

Secure Data Management
Data files stored within a database benefit from increased security. It's less likely that private information stored within a database will be compromised, as long as your IT department is up to snuff. Information can be classified, and it will be easier to keep duplicate records.

Easy Access To Data
A database manager provides easy access to information. Because the information is centralized, the user has no need to look to other applications or sources. All is provided through a singular database system, and the information in the database can be repurposed and fed into a company Web site or blog.

Fast Information Recall
Due in part to a series of complex algebraic algorithms that work together to recall information easily, querying a database should produce a quick result. When compared to locating the information manually, users find this quick recall an attractive feature of databases.

Cut Down On Staff Size
A database that is used effectively will minimize the need for extra staff to maintain information. Although databases can account for a sizable initial investment, it will more than pay for itself after long-term active use.

Increased Efficiency
Even if you are not looking to minimize your staff, database technology can still benefit your company. It will add to the productivity of employees by freeing up their time.

How to promote database in Malaysia ???

There are several ways can be promoted database in Malaysia .
First , government should force every universities must have the degree of Computer Science ( database ). Hence , every person who want apply IPTA and IPTS , can consider about the database ..In a long term , database will be popular as software engineering .
Second way is the head of department of faculty can give a talk about database to the student , especially is form 5 and form six student . The talk should interested and gv a good impression about database . I think if they know database well , the student sure will choose database as his or her choice when apply university .

Third way is invite famous people from other country to talk their work experience about database to public .In my opinion , this is a quite good because can let public know the experience . Hence , I think most of the people will change the mind about database . There are quite large number of people think database is a very boring job , so they dun wan choose database as their professional .Actually database is a very interesting job and can a high salary .

Why dun wan study database ? Go ahead , u will learn more than others ^^

Why software engineers is more popular compared to database ???

In my opinion , most of the people heard the 'engineers ' automatic will give a higher expectation ... They think engineers is a high status job, salary is higher than others ...
Do u all think about the database ??? Database is the most important subject in computer science ...As a database student , need to know the importance of database ...First , databases may be classified to four types: individual , company , distributed , commercial . The individual database is also called a microcomputer database . It is a collection of integrated files primarily used by just one person . Typically , the data and the DBMS are under the direct control of the user . They are stored either on the user 's hard-disk or on a LAN file server.
Companies , of course , create database for their own use. The company database may be stored on a central database server and managed by a database administrator . Users throughout the company have access to the database through their microcomputer linked to local or wide area networks.

Many times the data in a company is stored not in just one location but in server locations . It is made accessible through a variety of communication networks. The database , then , is a , distributed database . That is , not all the data in a database is physically located in one place . Typically , database servers on a client / server network provide the link between the data .

A commercial database is generally an enormous database that an organiAtion develops to cover particular subjects. It offers access to this database to the public or selected outside individuals for a fee. Sometimes commercial database are also called information utilities o data banks . An example is LexisNexis , which offers a variety of information -gathering and reporting services .

8 Great Careers for a Computer Science

You are about to graduate with a degree in computer science. You thought that this was a good decision because you are fascinated by computer programs and really enjoyed learning about how to design them. However, as graduation nears, you are starting to wonder what you can possibly do for a job now that you’re going to be done with college. The job market for people with computer science majors is competitive but that doesn’t mean that you won’t have options. In fact, there are a lot of different career paths that someone could take after graduating with a degree in computer science.
Here is a look at eight different jobs that you might get after you’ve completed a computer science major in college:
1. Software Designer for a Tech Company. One of the most common jobs that people get after graduating with a computer science degree is a software design and development job within any tech company that happens to be hiring. People work in this position at the entry level, usually participating as part of a team in the development of new software. This software may relate to any aspect of technology. Hot areas including mobile Internet software and issues related to computer security.
2. Start-up Company Partner. Some people like the idea of doing software development and design but they don’t actually want to be stuck doing this within the confines of someone else’s business. It is common these days for students to come together during their course work in the computer science program and to decide to launch a start-up business together after graduation. A good path for these people to follow is to go ahead and enter a graduate program in computer science while beginning to launch your new business.
3. Research Positions Related to Computer Development. People who don’t necessarily want to work hands-on in developing software but who do have an interest in being on the cutting edge of the interest may find that they enjoy assisting in technological research projects that relate to how computers will be used in the future. Entry-level positions for a computer science major may be limited in this area but it’s possible to find them if you get in with the right company.
4. Various IT Positions. Many computer science majors opt to get entry level positions within the Information Technology field. They do a combination of software design, software implementation and computer technology development. Basically anything related to analyzing a business in terms of its computer organization and working to improve the organization of the business so that it operates more smoothly would fall into the category of IT work. There are both general and specific jobs within the IT field that can be obtained with a basic degree in computer science.
5. Office Admin / Customer Service/ Troubleshooter. Some computer science majors opt to take general office positions within both computer and non-computer-related businesses and then serve as the main person who troubleshoots when problems arise with the computer system. They may also act as a liaison in a customer service position, assisting a company’s clients in dealing with computer problems. This allows computer science majors to work in different types of businesses but still do the type of work that their education has taught them to do best.
6. Freelance Computer Programming. People with a degree in computer science are typically skilled enough at basic computer programming that they can help develop programs for a diverse range of different types of businesses. It is possible to do this work freelance if you are interested in working from home on your own schedule although you have to be highly self-motivated to do so.
7. Writing / Blogging about the Industry. Those few lucky people who are skilled not only at the math behind computer science but also at using words to explain technology to others may find that they can use their education to serve as experts in the computer industry. They may start a blog or write articles for large magazines related to the issues that are of importance to people in the computer science field.
8. Teaching. Some people may choose to take a different type of career path and use their education as a stepping stone for a career in child education. People interested in sharing their technological skills with students in the K-12 grades may find that a computer science background serves them well in getting this best computer education positions in those schools.
These are some of the most common general jobs that you can pursue once you have a basic college degree in computer science. Because this is such a competitive field, it is a wise idea to go on to get an advanced degree in this industry. People who get specialized degrees in the specific niche areas of computer technology that interest them most are capable of going on to get better, higher-paying and more interesting jobs in areas including artificial intelligence studies, technology business development and even the legal issues related to computer technology.
However, there are plenty of people who graduate with a basic college degree in computer science and do fine for themselves in standard computer careers that do not require an advanced degree. Combining a steady job at a technology firm with work in blogging, teaching or start-up endeavors can help to keep this type of work interesting even without going on to get a Masters Degree or PhD in Computer Science or another computer-related field.

DataBase???

A database is an organized collection of data for one or more purposes, usually in digital form. The data are typically organized to model relevant aspects of reality (for example, the availability of rooms in hotels), in a way that supports processes requiring this information (for example, finding a hotel with vacancies). This definition is very general, and is independent of the technology used.
The term "database" may be narrowed to specify particular aspects of organized collection of data and may refer to the logical database, to physical database as data content in computer data storage or to many other database sub-definitions.
The term database is correctly applied to the data and their supporting data structures, and not to the database management system (referred to by the acronym DBMS). The database data collection with DBMS is called a database system.
